About Real Decibel Meter

Real Decibel Meter is a static web app that estimates sound input with your microphone, entirely inside your browser.

Last materially reviewed: 2026-09-21

What the tool measures

Without calibration it converts weighted digital dBFS into a clearly labelled nominal dBA, dBC or dBZ estimate using a +100 dB default offset. A device-specific calibration profile replaces that default for better accuracy. How results are calculated is documented in the methodology; limits in accuracy and limitations.

What it does not claim

There are no accounts, no servers receiving audio, and no claims of lab testing, formal approval or measured accuracy percentages — because none apply to browser microphones. The idle reading is “--”, estimates are labelled as estimates, and safety verdicts are never shown.

How to use it well

Start with how to use the meter: grant microphone permission once, keep the device still, read current, minimum, energy-average and maximum values, then export CSV or JSON. For everyday comparisons use A-weighting; for loud peaks compare C-weighting; see dB vs dBA and the decibel comparison chart.

Calibration and verification

Every microphone has different gain, so compare against a known reference and store the difference as an offset — see calibration. Repeatability checks are documented in the validation protocol. For focused diagnostics use the background noise test, the microphone noise floor test, and the dBFS vs dB SPL explainer.
